First Kushiro banana harvest, Hokkaido Sky Farm

2020-12-11

On November 20, Hokkaido Sky Farm started the first ever “946 Banana (pronounced Kushiro Banana) harvest at one of their fields in eastern Hokkaidos Kushiro City. The bananas are highly cold-resistant, have thin peels, and are grown without agricultural chemicals and chemical fertilizers. This gives them the unique characteristic of being edible whole, with the peel on. Banana growing is rare in Hokkaido, and expectations are riding on production of the 946 Banana as a new type of produce for Kushiro. The plan is to ship the bananas nationwide in December at a price of 1,000 yen (before tax) per banana as a high quality product.

In November of last year, Hokkaido Sky Farm began cultivating 900 nursery trees of a species high in nutrition. The trees are growing in agricultural greenhouse space kept at 17 to 25 degrees Celsius. Baby green bananas started appearing this summer.

On November 20, Hokkaido Sky Farm harvested 18 bananas that had grown over 20 centimeters in length. The worker in charge of cultivation reported, “Growth was delayed by temperatures that were colder than we had foreseen, and there was some concern over whether the bananas would grow at all. But they have matured wonderfully.
