"Blue Otaru Canal" illuminated by ten thousand lights
The local tradition of lighting up the Otaru Canal in the Central Hokkaido city of Otaru is happening right now. Approximately ten thousand blue LED lights are shining, and the magical “Blue Canal” scene delights sightseers.
The illumination started on November 1 as part of the winter tourism campaign “Otaru-Yoichi Yuki Monogatari” (The Otaru-Yoichi Snow Story) organized by the tourist associations of both Otaru and the Shiribeshi region town of Yoichi. On November 7 as well, a span of approximately 300 meters along the canal shone with blue illumination after sundown.
A woman visiting from Kanagawa Prefecture expressed joy, “The warehouse district atmosphere and the blue lights match each other and look very beautiful.”
The illumination will last until January 31 of next year. It is on display from sundown to 10:30 p.m.
In the JR Yoichi Station area as well, LED lights with an amber color to evoke the image of
whiskey will be lit up until February 14 of next year.
